Food Essay Essay

Food. When people see or hear that word, many of them think of food as something that just keeps us healthy and alive. In my perspective that is true. But there is so much more to it than many people see. It is cultural, a tradition, and can have many different meanings. It can also be seen as edible art and a way to express yourself. To me, it is a way to get away from everything. As a child, I didn’t enjoy eating what my parents wanted me to. I was obsessed with sugary treat and that is almost the only thing I’d enjoy eating. Going to the dentist was always a pain because I was always scared of the dentist which till this day I don’t like going to the dentists. My mother would always think I would have a lot of cavities but to her surprise I never had any cavities as a child. But the bad side was, I would always get stomach aches because of the amounts of sugar I would eat. Even that wouldn’t stop my sweet tooth. As I got older I slowly realized that there are so many other foods that taste amazing! I would begin eating more and more foods that were different. And nowadays I love food! I eat everything that my mother will cook; I am not the same picky child as I was before. I not only love to eat food, but I love to cook as well. I’m definitely not an amazing cook but I still love it and it means a lot to me. Just give me a recipe and the ingredients and I will be fine. Just like anyone my age, I started off cooking small and easy foods. I would begin with cooking eggs, omelets, brownies and pancakes. And I would slowly make more and more types of food. For example I love cooking pasta and making sushi with my mother. It doesn’t seem like very high end kind of foods to make but it does the job well and tastes great and is healthy at the same time. Now that I am an adult, more is more expected from me from both my parents and my boyfriend. All three of them are making me learn to cook more and more because it’s something everyone my age should know how to do. Food is not only great tasting, but also is a stress reliever; a mood changer. Whenever I am feeling down, sad or maybe even bored I can always count on my kitchen because it isn’t going anywhere and is always there when I need it. Especially when I have an anxiety attack and I just want to be alone, I plug in my earphones, turn up my music and eat of course. It really helps me at home and helps me cope with being away from my boyfriend who is stationed on the other side of America and who just got home from Afghanistan. Just something about food that helps me feel better all the time. As a child I remember always watching my mother cooking and all. And just like every other child I always wanted to help because it would make me feel more grown up. So as awesome as my mother is, she would let me help her. Of course she gave me the easiest things to help her with. For example, if she was baking a cake she would let me crack the eggs, put in the butter, use the measuring cup to put in the right amount of flour. And she would even let me mix the batter too sometimes. When my mother would let me do all those things it made me feel so empowered and I felt like a responsible adult. As I got older, cooking had a special place in my heart. She would slowly let me make on my own, with her by my side of course. Making sure I’m doing it right. Till this day I remember always sneaking into the kitchen and steal some batter from the cake she was making and run off giggling. I would also sneak the chocolate she was using. Every time my mother bakes, I always have these memories. The house would always smell so good when she would cook. Food isn’t just plain and simple. It is unique and is almost fragile. While cooking even the smallest change in the recipe can change the taste of the dish dramatically. With spices especially it can change the food because if you put too little it won’t taste good, same if you out too much. You have to put in the perfect amount for it to taste good. Not only is the taste of the food good, but also the smell of the food while cooking is amazing. While cooking the smell of the food cooking just makes you want to eat it a lot more. When it comes to cooking, my mother is my biggest inspiration because no matter what is going on at home, when my mom fixes us some food; it of course doesn’t fix any of the problems but it does lighten the mood and helps us feel a little better. I’ve noticed that many arguments are when people are hungry or have an empty stomach. She absolutely loves cooking and it makes her happy and it’s the same for me as well. As I was younger, I would love to watch cooking shows where they compete over who can cook the best, also I would love watching the shows where they show a lot of cooking gadgets. Those shows always caught my attentions. Watching those shows just amazes me because of the things people can create with food, it’s just breath taking and makes me so happy! As for being Ukrainian and Polish, we h ave many different types of food that we make. In my culture we eat a lot of potatoes. Many people think it’s funny and weird that we eat a lot of potatoes but to me it tastes good and it is very healthy. We also make many different salads. Being Ukrainian and Polish and coming from a fairly large family, we eat a lot so it opens my eyes to many different types of food and makes me interested in trying everything. If I had to describe food in my perspective in the least amount of words I’d have to say that food to me is not just food, it’s a way I live my day to day life and what I create with food is not just to keep me stress free but is also a hobby and a way I keep people I know happy. Food isn’t just something we can just describe as a culture or what goes in our stomachs.

Electronic Human Resource Management

Electronic Human Resource Management can be defined as â€Å"The processing and transmission of digitalized HR information, especially using computer networking and the Internet† (pg. 52) basically, because technology has such a hold over most of the world, e-HRM is considered beneficial. It is faster, sometimes easier, and can be more proficient than the ‘over worked and under paid’ employee. Just because almost everything is now electronic doesn’t mean that there isn’t a need for humans any more. Someone has to sit behind that desk and enter in all of the electronic information, look through the records and make sure all of the social security numbers are correct, and be there for technical support when the system is down or someone is having a user error. Many businesses’ today rely solely on e-HRM like the Armed Forces. Here at Mountain Home Air Force Base we have such system called The Portal. Inside this Portal, everything about anything you have ever done or would want to know can be found in here. Many HRM practices are done through this portal for all military and DoD civilians. My work as a Personal Property counselor survives and is only possible with the use of e-mail. Because we work with everyone, including the deployed members currently serving overseas, what we do is damn near impossible without the use of our email. We cannot inform members of required documentation needed, deadlines that must be met, and forwarding up information to our headquarters, which is located in Colorado Springs, CO. My office at MHAFB uses the HRM practice of analysis and design of work faithfully on a daily, even weekend basis. Recruiting: With our Portal, we have an Intranet based link called AMS, Assignment Management System. Through here, you can look at every single job opening on every Air Force Base in every country. When I log onto this AMS site, I can look at every job opening and the requirements for that job based on my job title. I can also choose to apply for this job through this system. Another practice of HRM is Training. In the Portal, everyone has an account in ADLS, Advanced Distant Learning System. In ADLS you may take any number of classes, free of charge to further your knowledge of the Air Force and the programs it has to offer. Selection includes testing. Also found in ADLS are countless CBT’s, Computer Based Training. Everyone must complete specified CBT’s from Homosexual training to Chemical Warfare in a deployed location. At the end of every CBT, a certificate will be printed out with proof of completion and how well you did, giving your UDM (Unit Deployment Manager) an idea of who she’s working with. The last practice of HRM is compensation and benefits. The portal has a link you can click in that will lead you to your myPay account. Through your myPay account you can see where every last penny came from, your current and past LES (Leave & Earning Statement), even your retirement plan that you have set up with the Air Force. The Air Force is just one example of how the majority of businesses are now electronic. Sooner or later we will live in a ‘Paperless work force† and everyone will be using e-HRM in one way or another. RESOURCES Fundamentals of Human Resource  Management. Gilbane Gold Ethical Model - Analysis Case Study

Gilbane Gold Ethical Model - Analysis - Case Study Example This problem on fairness has been raised by individuals and masses for affirmative action on in convincing ethics. The place from which this case has been based on is Gilbane, an imaginary town. The mud that comes from the sewage plant situated in the city for very many years has been used as fertilizers and the sales are made under Gilbane Gold. This firm generates revenue from Gilbane Gold that supplements the city’s tax revenue. This tax revenues saves a family composed of four roughly 3000 dollars every year. For the lively income source to be protected, restrictions that are very harsh should be implemented on disposal of metals that are heavy in sewages. This sewage if well taken care of can provide farmers with fertilizers. Before the implementation of these regulations, this city had a good name on matters pertaining to business. It also gave tax abatements to the firms, which chose to locate to the town. Therefore, after the location of many firms into the city, enact ment of the restrictions was done. Z CORP being one of the firms that located there monitored discharge in monthly bases from the plants, which produced toxic materials at that time of manufacturing. The problem in this case arises where the firms in this city have the responsibility of supplying data from the tests carried out and modern tests have been developed. Firstly, the engineer in charge has the mandate to sign for the accuracy of tests carried out. There has been interference with the law that governs effluents in that its main purpose is to regulate amount of discharge and not the quantity as a whole. This makes it easy for a plant to operate within standards set by Gilbane just by escalating the discharge volume. Another issue on the modern test method is that if it is used there is a detection of excess emissions allowance frequently. In contrary, there has been a tendency to cling onto initial method of testing by the occupants of this city. Z CORP is faced with a prob lem on whether to disclose the outcomes or to undisclose it. If it does not do that employees may insinuate that, the firm portrays bad faith towards the city. The plant’s engineer dismisses a consultant, believing the action was out of warnings on discharge levels. This engineer has two concerns, discharge of metals by Z CORP and realization of the effect that the contract signed by Z CORP means to the city. The only action he arrives at is blowing the whole crime out through the media. Problem analysis In order to analyze the problem encountered, one has to be fit to act as the engineer, and should be in a position to handle the problems that were encountered by him. What this statement implies is that, an individual should first be an agent not a judge. The individual should be able to analyze the problem by imagining to be faced by it and has the responsibility to make a decision and not as one who evaluates. To start with, the debate, which appears to arise over moral is sues, is in the real sense disagreements on facts that are relevant. In any case two engineers fall out on a decision that the government opts to take; the engineers might think that the disagreement is about issues related to ethics. Further discussion reveals the difference emanates from the question of the best way to eliminate discrimination. Although some may conceptualize that women’s ethics will continue for a while despite taking of affirmative action, some have a different belief that there can be

Homework 3 in Excel Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

Homework 3 in Excel - Assignment Example It is not possible for the line to achieve the TAKT time of 1.2 minutes per part off line unless it is able to reduce the bottle neck time. It may require additional labor to work at the station or creating multiple lines to speed up the process. Both will assist in increasing the output to meet the TAKT time. T&D electric manufactures high-voltage switches and other equipment for electric utilities. One line that is staffed by three workers assembles a particular type of switch. Currently the threes workers have fixed assignments; each worker fastens a specific set of components on the switch and passes it downstream on a rolling conveyor. The conveyor has capacity to allow a queue to build up in front of each worker. The bottleneck is the middle station with a rate of 11 switches per hour. The raw processing time is 15 minutes. To improve efficiency of the line, management is considering cross-training the workers and implementing some form of flexible labor system. Floor-On, Ltd., operates a line that produces self-adhesive tiles. This line consists of single-machine stations and is almost balanced (i.e., station rates are nearly equal). A manufacturing engineer has estimated the bottleneck rate to be 2200 cases per 16-hour day and the raw process time to be 30 minutes. The line has averaged 1,500 cases per day, and cycle time has averaged 5 hours. d) If after process improvements the ten machines that required ten workers to run them are no longer needed. Instead five workers are now needed what would you do with the remainder of workers not working on that line anymore? (And please don’t fire them) (1

Mother - Essay Example She delivers a mother’s role including caring for her children in relation to education and daily needs. An exclusive examination of her daily activities reveals how motherly she is. She wakes up every morning to prepare breakfast for her four children. She understands that the children have to gain educational status. Besides the breakfast, she adequately prepares dinner and lunch for the children. The inherent photo depicts her daily chores and obligations relating to meal preparation. In the photo, she prepares nutritious lunch for the children coming from school. Nutritious provision is domineering in maintaining the health status of children within the family, an obligation that the mother understands. Besides effective meal preparation, the mother ensures that her children attend school. She accompanies them to school every morning and consequently picks the four lovely children in the evening. Such daily routine encourages the children to work more diligently. Moreover, the students grow and develop with the understanding of motherly love. The plight of the mother in preparing meals and ensuring effective education for her children is reflective of the societal obligation bestowed on

Intelligence with Educational Teaching Research Paper

Intelligence with Educational Teaching - Research Paper Example Verbal-linguistic intelligence is ability to use language as a way to express oneself and appreciate as well as apply complex meanings. The visual-spatial intelligence has to do with mental imagery, artistic skills, spatial reasoning as well as having an active imagination and manipulation skills. Next is interpersonal intelligence which has to do which ability to understand and effectively communicate with others being mindful of their moods and temperaments. This is close to intrapersonal intelligence which is a deep understanding of oneself and the ability to be self-reflective on emotions and strengths and weaknesses. Lastly is existential intelligence which is ability to tackle issues of human existence such as life and death issues as well as spiritual existence (Chen, Moran and Howard 10). Recognition of these intelligences can enable the teachers build on the strengths of each student’s abilities and make them excel in them (Wadhwa 51). The recognition also allows better interaction and grouping of students in class in order to ensure they exploit, explore and benefit from each other’s skills and abilities based on the types of intelligence each student possesses. Recognition of these intelligences in students and building on them is the best way to eliminate the learning frustrations students have as they can focus completely on what they are good at and the rest can be assisted by other students. Neglect of the type of intelligence a student possesses is the gateway to not only frustrated students with education but to leaving school as well and encouraging criminal behaviour in the society. When a student does not know that they have skills or ability in one form of the mentioned intelligence or the other, they consider themselves of no value and think they cannot benefit through education and hence find no need to not only study but become a respectable individual in society (Tough 36). This can

Company Assessment Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words - 1

Company Assessment - Research Paper Example China, which is Nike's largest single sourcing country, employs more than 210,000 people and has over 180 manufacturers. The supply chain management was affected by the issues of unpaid wages, presentation of falsified documents, and underage employees. (Global Supply Chain Council, 2008) Nike tried to make sure that its code of conduct was followed by the Chinese manufacturers, in addition to Chinese laws. The official report released by Nike stated that labor-related issues such as hiring practices, inadequate grievance system for workers, falsified payroll records, and underage workers, were of great concern. (Global Supply Chain Council, 2008) When an identity check was carried out on 150,000 of Nike's workers in China, it was found that 167 employees were underage at the tie of recruitment and two of them were still underage. Paid wages were also not as per the raises mandated by the government. Moreover, the report stated that some of Nike's Chinese contract factories were playing tricks so they don't have to alter the wage levels. (Global Supply Chain Council, 2008) Nike is building a logistics centre in eastern China, which is to complete by the end of next year. This facility, like that in Jiangsu province, will be using high-tech conveyers and sorters for tracking and mobility of its products.Radio frequency technology will also be used to enhance efficiency and accuracy. Nike China is working hard to develop a state-of-the-art logistics facility and exhibit its expertise in supply chain management. It's also working to resolve labor issues, which leave a bad impact on company's reputation. Employing underage workers is the violation of international human rights and working laws. Moreover, many countries, such as USA are very particular about not doing trade of items that involve underage labor. This does not only harm company's prestige but also its revenues. (Gabe Perna, 2009 and Portland Business Journal, 2009) Recently, a Greenpeace report named "Slaughtering the Amazon" had identified different shoe companies that were held responsible for deforestation in the Amazon. Nike was one of them. Last month Nike announced its new leather policy of no sourcing from Amazon rainforest. It conducted extensive discussion with the suppliers and claimed that it is going to make sure that leather used in Nike products is not coming from Amazon rainforests. However, as there is no standard tracing systems a yet, the company cannot give a 100% guarantee. (Global Supply Chain Council, 2009) Nike has called its suppliers to develop a tracking system that would make sure that the leather used does not come from cattle raised in Amazon Biome. Suppliers are to come up with a transparent and traceable tracking system by July 1 next year. Incase suppliers fail to do so; Nike will extend the area outside of Amazon as its leather source. Suppliers are also required to become members of Leather Working Group by the end of this year. Nike is working with this group to create an industry standard traceability system. Ethics Paper Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words - 1

Ethics Paper - Essay Example While some may regard this as a victory, there are three reasons why ethics does not support the law in the instance in which this nine year old child is returned to her parents after so many years, and there are two schools of ethics, Ends Based and Care based that one might use to solve such a dilemma. The first reason why ethics does not support the law in this particular situation is that problems with attachment can develop if a child is suddenly uprooted from a family that she regards as her own and is placed with people she is unfamiliar with, even if they are her biological parents. This girl has been with her foster parents all of these years, has formed a bond with them, and they have played a major role in her social and emotional development. Now, she is uprooted, and she must go to people she has never met in her entire life to pick up where she left off. Research shows that it is quite traumatic to a child to be uprooted from a comforting environment, where attachments are formed, to be placed in one that is completely unfamiliar. For instance a journal article titled "Expressed emotions, early caregiver-child interaction, and disorders" talks about the importance of attachment and how it is the framework of the child's development.

Warehousing and Inventory Management Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3000 words

Warehousing and Inventory Management - Essay Example In order to achieve these competencies we are discussing the various aspects of warehouse space utilization and layout plans. There are several plans of layout, which has been discussed, and each has its own advantages and drawbacks. If the warehouses are used efficiently and effectively, it improves the effectiveness of whole supply chain. As we know that we are moving through communication revolution, better use of information and communication technology improves the warehouse operations management. While discussing the case study of Seven-Eleven Japan we observed that how use of information and communication technologies have improved the warehousing operations of the organization as a whole and have the potential to proved benefit to the customers. Through use of information and communication technology, objectives of the warehouse manager to provide goods and services to its customers timely and efficiently will be fulfilled. We had also evaluated the traditional and modern inv entory management practices and found that modern practices like JIT have outnumbered the traditional inventory management systems like re-order or economic order quantity on various parameters. Storage is the 1. Warehouse space and layout: Storage is the physical hording of inventories awaiting transport to customers. The current emphasis is on the movement of inventories. According to Layson (2000), there are a number of important issues to be considered: Acknowledgement that reducing ware housing and storage costs is essential; Automated stores and computerized system make it possible to better manage these facilities; Trade-off between higher customer service levels, low inventory and low operating costs need to be balanced; Changes in business practices through the implementation of just-in-time (JIT) and Kanban concepts; Better logistics systems; Time-compression, reducing time consumed in business processes, Elimination of non-value-added time. In the process of warehouse layouts and space, organizations primarily focus on The space required and cost for each category of stock, Whether to centralize or decentralize the stores Physical characteristics of the stores at each location e.g. size, weight, shape, perishable, hazardous Flows of material and handling equipment required Goods received into store, quantities, volumes, frequencies, packing, delivery vehicles, handling requirements, documentation and inspection Foods outwards-quantities, volumes, frequencies packing, delivery vehicles, handling requirements, documenting & packaging; Inventory policies e.g. JIT buffer sticks, stock pilling Security, safety, administrative system, and personnel. To fulfill these above-mentioned conditions, warehouse space and layout planning must have following objectives in mind: Utilizing space efficiently within the building cube Create rapid and easy access to stock and stock movements Achieve efficient and balanced traffic flows Mechanized and automated stores operations

Professional development Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 4500 words

Professional development - Essay Example Part 2 (1) Reflection on the nature of professionalism required in chosen career The chosen career is related to the management consultancy; the nature of professionalism required in the specific career will be depended on the following criteria: a) the personal skills and capabilities – as revealed through appropriately customized self-assessment questionnaires and through the feedback of colleagues and friends; b) the conditions of the target market, meaning the requirements set by employers for the specific job position, as these requirements have been identified though job adverts and the websites of organizations supporting the professional development of employees in the particular industry and c) the responses of the environment, as they have been estimated by reviewing relevant literature. In any case, reference should be made primarily to professionalism, as a framework that can influence the performance on the chosen career. In accordance with a definition published by the Oxford Dictionary online, the term professionalism is used in order to show â€Å"the competence or skill expected of a professional: the key to quality and efficiency is professionalism† (Oxford Dictionary online, 2011). In the chosen career, professionalism is expected to have certain form, which will be related to a series of different criteria, such as values, ethics, attitude, knowledge and so on. These criteria/ elements of professionalism can be identified primarily through the literature published in the particular field. Then, additional evidence can be used in order to verify the effectiveness of the literature findings – referring to the studies focusing on the examination and the evaluation of professionalism as a key element for the successful performance of individuals in the workplace. It should be noted that the term ‘professionalism’ in consultancy might include different elements and respond to different needs compared to other car eer paths (Rhoton et al. 2001). In any case, the professional development cannot be completed before the entrance in the workplace; this means, that the period of study and training – as a preparatory phase before applying for a particular position – cannot fully support the professional development of an individual (Hristozova, 2006). Through another approach Scott (2000) made clear that professional development is continuous, being similar to the self-development which is likely to be continuous; thus, professional development, as an aspect of self-development, need also to be continuous securing the improvement of the employee’s position within his organization. The skills of consultants, which would help them to develop a high level of professionalism, can be retrieved through the literature published on the specific field. In accordance with Margerison (2011, p.31) the key advantage of consultants would be the self-organizing, i.e. their ability to categori ze and appropriately evaluated the material related to a specific social/ scientific area (see Table 1, Appendix). On the other hand, Niewiem (2005) noted that the most important skill of consultants would be their interaction ability (meaning the ability to communicate with others and use appropriate evidence for

Radio and Television in Mass Media Essay Example for Free

Radio and Television in Mass Media Essay A form of media that revolutionized the way humans communicate was the radio. David Sarnoff is the best candidate for the man who put radio on the map. Although it may have not been his choosing, the sinking of the Titanic in 1916 put his name in the record books. For three days straight, the young Sarnoff decoded messages from the sinking ship from his office in New York (Wells 36). The Titanic broadcast was groundbreaking, because it showed and economically profitable way by which radio could be used as a medium of mass communication for ordinary families (Wells 36). By 1930 transmitters were popping up in cities around the nation. A record 30 million households had a set, and the one set per household was becoming a reality (Wells 42). The power of radio was not really noticed until a monumental broadcast in 1939. H.G. Wells War of the Worlds broadcast brought a whole nation to its knees and caused widespread panic among millions of viewers. Hours after the broadcast, people from coast to coast were thrown into panic, believing monsters from Mars, invulnerable space ships were destroying the earth. They took to cars, ran out to warn neighbors, traffic was jammed, church services were ended. Four times during the show the listeners were reminded that they were hearing a dramatization, but many citizens couldnt see past. After the incident, Wells told reporters that radio is a popular democratic machine for disseminating information and entertainment (Naremore 38). The power of radio was soon known, and this incident brought light to it. Today there more than 575 million radios in America alone (Encyclopedia Britannica). The latest study from the National Broadcasting Company found that 90.5 percent of the adult population listens to some type of radio during the week. Today, Clear Channel Communications owns over 1,200 radio stations across the United States, and Cumulus, the second largest owns 266 stations. (Grant, Meadows 141). With the FCC eliminating caps on ownership, one day everyone may be listening to the same news, spun whichever way Clear Channel feels like spinning it; to the left wing, or the right. Traditional radio is facing its toughest battle these days though. Satellite radio is sweeping through the market like a wildfire; with CD-quality sound, and hundreds of channels to choose from, who wouldnt spend the ten dollars a month to have  XM or Sirius? Although both companies reported losses in mid-2004, each service looks to become profitable by the end of 2005 (Grant 142). Radio will be hard-pressed to keep up with satellite. XMs digital music library is among the worlds largest 1.5 million titles and counting. Out of the 121 channels available on XM, 68 are 100% commercial free 24 hours a day, year round, with over 1500 hours of live programming every week. Although XM and Sirius only represent radios 4.5 million subscriptions only represents a fraction of radios 290 million weekly listeners, the number of satellite subscriptions is expected to double in 2005 (Bachman 4). On Christmas Day 2004, over 50,000 subscribers signed up for satellite radio service. If both companies hit their projections, there will be 7.7 million satellite radio subscribers by January 2006 (Bachman 4). Satellite radio isnt the only next generation radio system on the market. In 2004, 10,000 HD radios were sold, with prices ranging from $500-$1,000. B the end of 2005, Strubble predicts there will be a t least 600 HD radio stations, covering 80% of the U.S. and about 100,000 HD radios sold. HD radio representative John Smulyan believes, WE think this is one of those opportunities for game-changing radio business (Bachman 5). Television began with three companies that still dominate the airwaves, ABC, NBC, and CBS. In a world of subscription, these companies till offer free TV, but the ratings are going more towards cable. The clean cut programming that was once aired is being replaced with a plethora of violence and political propaganda that may ruin television. Television ranks just behind radio in penetration in the U.S. With over 106 million home, or 98% of the U.S. population having televisions, there is a plethora of sets ready to catch signals for people to view. Network TV has emerged over the last two decades as the dominant vehicle for interpreting national politics. TV has become the major source of news for the population, and the only news source for others. The problem is that politicians and journalists feed off each other like leeches. The politician needs the journalist for their messages to reach the intended audience, and journalists need the politicians to have something to write about. The coverage politicians seek gives them an outlet from which to speak. Those  who look good in the media can make a good image for themselves. The real problem comes when the news turns out to be propaganda, causing action from an opposing side that leads to deception. More than propaganda, violence seems to be the hot topic debated daily by politician and parent alike. Can what you child sees on television affect how he lives his/her life? E.B. White once said that television is going to be the test of the modern world (Simons 151). There is no doubt that television has become the central activity in homes today. Its ability to entertain, teach and persuade has huge impact on viewers. In the United States 98% of households have at least one set (Simons 149). What is astonishing is that children are watching an average of 7.5 hours a day (Simmons 149). One of the main concerns with television programming is the violence viewed by children that cannot understand the differences between fantasy and reality. Davidson, in a issue of Rolling Stones, agreed that children are vulnerable to television between the ages of 2 to 8 years because of their maturational inability to separate what they view from reality (qtd. in Simmons 152). Violence was such an issue that is came under consideration in the 50s and 60s in Congress. The findings supported the idea that a casual relationship existed between television violence and aggressive behavior. The National Coalition on Television Violence has classified the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers as the most violent program ever studied, with almost 200 violent acts per hour (Simmons 150). In an experimental study involving 5 to 11 year olds, children who watch Power Rangers committed seven times more aggressive acts than those who did not. Shows such as these caused a large number of accidents and quarrels due to the children imitating the characters actions. There is no doubt that the television programming has engulfed the U.S. population. As of 2003, 71.3% of U.S. households received cable programming (Grant, Meadows 29). This fact is amazing, because cable had only been around for fifty years. Not only programming is changing, but how we receive it as well. In May 2002, the FCC set a deadline by which all U.S. commercial television broadcasters were required to be broadcasting digital television signals. This date was a little early though, but by September 2003, 38 of 40 stations in the 10 largest markets in the United  States began broadcasting digital television signals (Grant, Meadows 28). By early 2004, 1.5 million household were watching HDTV, and that number is going to rise sharply. This means clearer sound and displays, recordable content, and crisp, clear reception of the same channels that have always been around. What if new 169 television sets make news broadcasts look weird or maybe cartoons might not look good on a widescreen set? Early Western Philosophy of Religion Essay Example for Free

Early Western Philosophy of Religion Essay of the classical three laws of rational thinking. Claiming that every proposition is either true or not true, the first law summarily excludes the possibility of a middle-of-the-road alternative between two extremes. The second law states that it is not possible for something to be both true and not true at once and in the same contextual framework. The third law ascribes specific traits to everything. In other words, no two things are similar to each other (De Riemer, 2009). Augustine, the first Archbishop of Canterbury and one of the torchbearers of the Gregorian mission, challenged the validity of the law of the excluded middle by raising questions about the moment of death, when a person is alive and yet to die. Such a brief transition, according to him, does not conform to the basic assumption stated in the law of the excluded middle, for the dying instance falls in a temporal void where this law is nonfunctional (Stump Kretzmann, 2001, p. 112). He, however, supported the law of noncontradiction on the basis of having certitude of knowledge about a given statement. Thus, he argued that â€Å"If there is one sun, there are not two† (Ibid, p. 163). In a way, Augustine endorsed inductive reasoning to substantiate his viewpoints on the foundational laws of thought. However, when it came to analyzing the law of identity, he discarded epistemological reasoning and embraced the core of Christian worldviews. The law of intrinsic essence of every being was, according to his opinion, a hypothesis that is relative to the monistic identity of the highest form of Being, e. g. God Himself. In other words, it is possible to develop collective identity given that it finds a stake similar to God’s image (Ibid, p. 87). Cosmological accounts of creation have been put forward by many of the early as well as modern thinkers. Various scientific theories have proved beyond doubt that our universe is not infinite. This proposition is tempting enough to ask what lies beyond the periphery. St. Thomas Aquinas, the medieval theologian and one of the seminal thinkers of his time, argued vociferously in favor of God’s existence on a cosmic level. His magnum opus Summa Theologiae is considered to be one of the treasure troves of philosophical treatises on creationism. Aquinas takes natural theology as the starting point of his argument. For nature, laws of existence are not rigid. It is possible for natural things to be born and destroyed, implying that everything is and is not at the same time. But it is truly impossible for anything to outlast its own expiration. What this means is that any form of existence is preceded by another form and that this chain continues backward till the creation of something that served independent of its own necessity for the sake of its succeeding creations. That something is nothing but what we believe as God (Meister, 2009, p. 67). I, despite being an atheist, strongly endorse the line of reasoning Aquinas used to prove God’s existence. He arrived at his intended position by means of teleological assumptions and subsequent cancellations – if A is true, A cannot be not true. This method of double negation, I believe, holds the secret to success of his originative theological account. References De Reimer, H. T. (2009). Studying The Erp System Problems

Studying The Erp System Problems Hindustan Unilever Limited is Indias largest fast moving consumer goods company. The common HUL brands include Kwality Walls icecream, Knorr soups and meal makers,Lifebuoy,Lux,Pears,Breeze,Sunsilk and Dove shampoos, Vim dishwash, Lakme beauty products etc. Problems faced by the company before ERP implementation: There was an arrival of modern trade in India. Its business infrastructure and various legacy systems were unable to meet the requirement for transactions and process capabilities of the modern trade.A legacy system means the computer has been in operation for a longer time and so its functions. Hindustan Unilever was not able to streamline its business operation. There was a need of much more smooth flow of information. HUL was facing a challenge of ensuring the optimization of business to have solutions to changing market needs.Company was also facing the challenge of reducing its stock replenishment cycle. Need for ERP implementation: To optimize business process and simplify IT management. 2. Consolidation of process is necessary. This must be done internally as well as across the value chain. 3. For the preservation of investment related to legacy inventory and cash-to-order management system.Cash to order management system is for the business partners. 4. Integrate with business partners IT infrastructure quickly and seamlessly. 5. To improve information sharing with partners even if they are not using SAPs solution. 6 .Increasing Supply Chain efficiency through process centric collaboration across the enterprise-internally and externally. 7. Enhancing the value of legacy system. 8. ERP system was also needed to ensure the distribution of goods at the right time at right places In this period of modern trade one needs to deliver a service level that is higher than what the industry provides right now and their supply chain has to be such that it is superior to its competitors. Their older version of ERP system was such that it was not able to meet these needs.Hence they were in search of a system which would help in catering like meeting future transactions of modern trade. HUL also realized that good communication skills and tight communication links was necessary for the optimization of its business and achieving higher efficiency of their supply chain . However, ensuring good connectivity between HULs IT system with its distributors was not an easy. Earlier the company was using an e-business system which was developed inhouse. This was to manage the processes of replenishment and order fulfilment. This was done by exchanging inventory and sales data between itself and their distributors. Synchronization was also necessary. But because their customers had multiple, different systems of their own, integrating their system with those customers to and ensuring smooth data exchange was a challenging task for them . Furthermore, the module of the E-Business system was customized..So as their business experienced growth, there were problems managing themselves with changing business needs. HUL has developed a standard distributor management system in a distributed general trade environment. If one wants the extended supply chain to be covered, the operations of the distributor needs to be integrated tightly with its internal Enterprise resource planning solutions .The system is functioning quite good, Hindustan Unilever Limited wants to its investment t be preserved in this area. Therefore the new ERP application must be able to integrate itself with this back-office application, so that the company can continue to use its borrowed money well or leverage and maximise this into the future. ERP IMPLEMENTATION It was in 2004 when HUL decided to renovate its IT system with SAP. By utilizing SAP as their provider of standard IT solutions , utilizing its enterprise which is full of different features, solutions and it fine experience in the consumer goods industry, thy will be able to execute their global transformation strategy. This strategy was aimed at streamlining and standardising the business processes across all its operations including global operations. It was to accelerate their transformation of business and simplify their IT department. The deal for HUL was SAP NetWeaver Process Integration (SAP NetWeaver PI) which enabled process-centric collaboration internally and across HULs extended value chain. SAP NetWeaver PI facilitated communication and an transfer of info between different applications together or multiple applications irrespective of whether it is an SAP or non-SAP solution. Why SAP implementation? It supported wide range of integrated Advanced Business Application Programmiing(ABAP) and SAP applications which are based on Java used throughout Hindustan Unilever Provided opportunity to drive new enhanced change and transport system functionality of SAP Solution Manager Phase 1 of HULs SAP implementation It was in Sept 2007. It was marked with the end of its legacy ERP and its e-business systems. The solutions which were deployed included SAP ERP Central Component (SAP ECC), SAP NetWeaver PI, SAP NetWeaver Business Intelligence (SAP NetWeaver BI), SAP NetWeaverComposition Environment (SAP NetWeaver CE), SAP NetWeaver Portal, SAP Solution Manager and SAP Supply Chain Management (SAP SCM). The most important thing for them is that by implementing SAP NetWeaver platform, they are fit to consolidate and exchange data which is critical for business across their internal processes and also externally with their partners, their various suppliers and different partners too. For eg, HUL is now able to retain or hold back its investment in Central Unify and Unify which is also their aim.It is possible due to SAP NetWeaver PI. It is due to this software that integration of the the legacy inventory and order-to-cash management system is now possible with the rest of the SAP-based system. SAP NetWeaver Portal is another SAP NetWeaver component that HUL is most impressed with , which is right now used for customer collaboration. Integration of HULs IT system with its distributors IT systems is now possible by replacing its e-business system with this portal. This therefore results in the replenishment and order fulfilment process. With SAP NetWeaver PI, we have finally streamlining, advancement and integration of their process capability hs finally become possible because of their SAP NetWeaver PI. This also has resulted in the enhancement of HULs ability in meeting modern trades demand. Phase 2 of SAP implementation: Includes implementation of SAP Customer Relationship Management, SAP Transportation Planning and Vehicle Scheduling, SAP Advanced Planning Optimisation Production Planning and Detailed Scheduling. Hindustan Unilever uses it to manage front end operations, backend operations, various business relationships, analysis and operational CRM. The growing information needs have to be met and the business practices have to be standardised. For HUL implemented Secondary Sales Force Automation (SSFA) Application across its redistribution stockists. Computer Manufacturing Company (CMC) has already implemented the Dealership Management Application Software for HUL distributors as part of earlier engagement. Connection between the redistribution stockists with the central database takes place through Internet-based network for online interaction on orders, information sharing, dispatches and monitoring. Companys Existing Scenario : Their existing environment consists of SAP ERP application , SAP NetWeaver ® Exchange Infrastructure Component , SAP NetWeaver Business Intelligence Component , SAP NetWeaver Portal component, SAP Supplier Relationship Management Application , SAP Customer Relationship Management Application. It has 23 central offices, two research centers . CF agents used to Planning of distribution was done by CF agents based on the demand which was raised by stockists. 60-90 days credit for the goods were given to C F agets and stockists. In 1995, 44% was the HULs net current assets as a percentage of capital employed, and inventory was 20% of divisional turnover for detergent and for personal products it was 24% divisional turnover. HUL after ERP HLL previously had a stock replenishment cycle time of two weeks after ERP implementation, it came down by three and half days, which translates into substantial savings in inventory costs. After ERP current assets as a percentage of capital employed was down to 8 percent, and inventory in key divisions was down to 5-6% of turnover. In the case of detergent, the stock level decreased to less than 3 weeks of sale from 6 weeks of sale. Finish goods stock level at distribution decreased from three weeks to one week. The stockists of HUL who were habituated to get 60-90 days of credit from HUL are now offered a special discount if the payment is in advance. As a result, orders are placed by stockists only for those stocks that can be replenished quickly. The channel inventory has drastically reduced in the entire network.

Welfare Reform: Temporary Assistance for Needy Families Legislation Ess

In August 1996, the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act (PRWORA) passed. This legislation ended the Family Aid with Dependent Children (AFDC) and replaced it with Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF). Unlike AFDC, TANF is not an entitlement program. This means that states are under no obligation to provide cash assistance to eligible families. Instead the federal government gives block grants to assist poor families with the emphasis on moving them from welfare to work or deterring them from applying for welfare in the first place. States are no longer obligated to match federal funds, creating an incentive to eliminate their previous portion of the funding for critical programs. Now due to less funding and no standard rules or regulations in place, thousands of families never find out that they still qualify for health insurance, childcare or food stamps. ?By eliminating the whole architecture of the old entitlement program, the federal government eliminated a lot of the existing protections for people? (Cahn pg. 1997). A recent study found, 60 percent of former welfare recipients in South Carolina did not know a parent could get transitional Medicaid, and nine states have no outreach efforts to inform parents that they were still entitled to receive childcare assistance after welfare benefits were closed (Sherman, Amey, Duffield, Ebb, & Weinstein, 1998). By denying or reducing coverage the state creates surplus (left over) funds that they are allowed to be used in other programs. Some states even went further using part of its welfare surplus to fund tax cuts for the middle class (Rose 2000). This new popular movement is in contrary to the original purpose of programs like TA... ...households (Sherman et al., 1998). How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie Essay

How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie Dale Carnegie's book How to Win Friends and Influence People gives several proven methods and examples on how to succeed in the business world. The book's chapters are comprised of how to handle people, how to be a successful leader, and how to win people to your way of thinking. The preface provides several ideas and suggestions that will help the reader get the most out of the book. The author suggests that the reader keep an open mind, and also suggest some other reading materials that will also help.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The first chapter deals with how to handle people successfully. In this chapter it highlights one of the most important things you can do when dealing with people and their particular situation is to rationalize with them, meaning that to better understand were the person is coming from you must put yourself in their shoes. Every one can and will rationalize why they make the decisions they make. People like the infamous Al Capone never thought he was a bad person. He had rationalized the actions he took and the decisions he made. This is a good example to lead into the first principle, which is that no one should ever critize, complain, or condemn other people. Principe two suggests that you always give people or sincere appreciation. You shouldn?t sit and think about your own individual accomplishments and successes, but compliment others on their successes. The most important thing that others can give is their genuine appreciation. That is the key to getting w hat you want, threatening people by force or harsh words, but to get others to do what you want is to give them what they want; appreciation for their deeds. Principle three explains that most people do not care what you want. They care mostly for themselves and are not really interested in what you want. The key is to expose them on how what you want will also benefit them; it establishes eagerness and willingness in the other people. A good example of this is fishing, you don?t bait the hook with what you want to eat, you bait the hook with what the fish want. Again, thinking from the other side?s perspective.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The second part of the book discusses ways on how to get people to like you. The first step is to become genuinely interested in them. People are more apt to like you if they feel admired by you. One must inst... ... rather than themselves making there own reputation. If you give a person a good reputation they will try their hardest to live up to the expectation and Dale suggest that they will very rarely let you down.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  I choose this book for my report because for one I started reading it last year but until now never had finished it. The other reason is because through out all my classes in the recreation department I have always been told of the importance of making contacts along the way. This book is an excellent tool in dealing with how to make the very best first impression, especially when the encounter might only last a few seconds. In this industry everyone is tring to get a head often times their own way. The principles in this book give detailed examples of how to work together and win people over to the ideas you have. Perhaps more importantly these techniques allow you to get ahead as a team in a industry that is so competitive. The things I have learned in this book I have already found myself in situations where I am applying Dale?s concepts. This book will be an important tool in my life and everyone in every industry should do themselves a favor and read this boo k.

Wedding Speech †Best Man -- Wedding Toasts Roasts Speeches

Wedding Speech – Best Man Before I begin with Leon’s character assassination, I should probably introduce myself, as a lot of you don’t know me†¦my name is Andy. My full name is actually Andy WhatcanIgetyou. For those of you who I meet in the bar later, I’d appreciate it if you could Use my full name. I’d also like to remind you, that the more you laugh at my gags the faster my speech will be delivered†¦so it’s in your own best interest†¦ I think being a best man can be a very nerve racking experience†¦(pause)†¦ if there’s one person here this afternoon feeling nervous, apprehensive and queasy about what lies ahead†¦.then it’s probably because you’ve just married Leon. Anyway, I wanted to take this opportunity, not only to demolish Leon’s reputation and character, but also to talk about Leon AND Lucy as a couple. In September 1998, Leon and I both started and met at Bath University. I think, in hindsight, going to Bath was one of the best decisions Leon ever made, as a few days in, he met Lucy. And from what I remember about 1st year (which frankly isn’t a lot), within a few weeks they were spending a lot of their time together and started to get quite close†¦ I remember myself and the other lads in our house used to constantly badger Leon to make an advance. And as you’ll probably know, Leon IS a bit of a fast mover when it comes to the ladies ..(pause†¦), so it took him only 1 year (pause†¦) (and severa... ...st doesn’t like to interrupt. On a more serious note, there’s not many best men who can describe both the groom and the bride as a true friend, and in that, I think I’m very lucky. It is an honour, albeit a most terrifying one, to have been asked to be the best man here today. But if I’m honest I do feel a certain relief to see the end of my duties in sight, as I’m totally certain that Leon will never have a need to call on met to be his best man again. As a final thought – â€Å"you don’t marry someone because you can live with them, you marry them because you simply cannot live without them†Ã¢â‚¬ ¦ Ladies and Gentlemen, please be upstanding and join me in a toast†¦ to Mr and Mrs [groom’s surname]†¦Leon and Lucy

However if you were to read done certain Japanese history text edition books you might be alarmed to fall out that Japan is portrayed not except as a victim kind of of an aggressor in the context of WWII and that thither is a lack of general learning regarding their tripicipation in the war all together.Largely in debate is the Nanking hardlychery in which the Japanese allegedly consistently kill 300,000 people including both civilians and soldiers. in that location are two prepares of thought, The Massacre self-denial and The Massacre Affirmative. The effect of this difference in truths being taught is that in Japan younger generations do not view Japan as having been an aggressor in the war, and younger Chinese generations continue to view the Japanese as horrible people. hence there is piece yield and Development / Sex Ed. duration many other(prenominal)(prenominal) believe it is a requirement section of what children learn in health classes, some find it to go against their finish. In certain groups scarcely discussing opening a womans menstrual cps or how a baby is do can be taboo. To those whose culture forbids them from having premarital sex, these classes can seem grungy and worrisome in the sense that by chance these classes will cause their children to commit these sins later on acquiring knowledge about it.Then there are also cultures who simply think that school is not a place for these things to be covered, and that it is the parents responsibility to teach their children about them themselves. Another main look up is also when these things will be taught. I myself remember being taught about the changes that would happen to my body once I resuscitate puberty starting around quaternary grade in Human Growth and Development classes. It wasnt until high school that anyone really talked about sex, and meanss to make it uninjured. Some people think that callable to rates of teen pregnancy and the way these teen parents seem to be getting younger and younger, that it may be unavoidable to begin bringing up safe sex much earlier on. However, many people believe this would be overstepping many cultural boundaries. Eithe r way schools just about always allow parents to remove children from these classes as they understand that these matters are viewed differently by different cultures. The way in which the possibleness of Evolution is taught by means ofout the U. A map print in a 2002 issue of scientific American which was based on entropy collected by Lawrence S. Lerner of California State University the map depicts the quality of coverage attached to the Theory of Evolution in each states Science Standards. It shows that while in a little over half of the states the belief of the theory is considered very good to sati sfactory, a number of states, particularly several in the Bible Belt, an area of the Southern United States where the culture reflects the strongly conservative and evangelical population which boasts higher church attending than the countries average there is unsatisfactory, useless, or dispatch coverage of the theory. The battle to allow for another theory to be taught instead of, or alongside Evolution is ongoing but has been approved in Kentucky as healthful as Tennessee. These states now teach universe of discourseism/Creation Science, A literal belief in the biblical account of Creation as it appears in the Book of Genesis. Creationists believe that the first appearance of the world and all its creatures took place in six calendar days they wherefore deny the theory of evolution. () In areas of the U. S. where faith is not a large part of culture it is not likely for Creationism to be seen as something which should be taught in lore classes, however is areas where the religious roots of a culture run deep the attempts such as these to control education are apparent. If one were to make a make of all things which are agreed upon by their culture to be truths and compared it to that of anothers there would undoubtedly be differences. While one would hope the majority of facts matched there will always be variations. This is reflected through the words of teachers and the knowledge of their students. Ones culture defines what education consists of and looks like for them, perhaps it seems unfair, but it is undeniably true. Not all children are taught the same truths.
